Colours of Provence – a holiday from self-guided walking specialist Inntravel
Purple lavender, houses of honey-coloured stone, ochre mines, yellow sunflowers tilted towards the blue sky, silver-green olive trees, plump red tomatoes, the white chalk of towering Mont Ventoux… Provence delights with its colours.
It would seem that the region was made for leisurely exploration and, with a week with a hire car in the medieval village of Fontaine de Vaucluse, the visitor can do just that, walking and exploring in complete freedom.
In harmony with its surroundings, the welcoming Hotel du Poète is charming and beautifully decorated. It has been converted from a 19th-century watermill on the banks of the River Sorgue and is an oasis of calm and tranquillity, despite being in the heart of this pleasantly bustling village. Outside, chairs are scattered invitingly by the river and small pool, while inside, the lounge and bedrooms are elegantly furnished.
There is more than enough within a 60-kilometre radius to fill an entire week. Historic Avignon and Roman monuments such as the Pont du Gard aqueduct vie for attention with countless picturesque villages.
There are also numerous moderate-level walks to enjoy, many of which can be combined with visits to places of interest. One not to be missed is the route across the flanks of Mont Ventoux, which commands inspirational views over Provence’s beguiling landscapes.
Prices are per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room, and include 7 nights’ accommodation, breakfast every day, 3 dinners, walking notes, maps and 7 days’ category B car hire.
