French Travel News-2010/2011 | Strength of UK pound making holidays more attractive

Friday, December 17th at 11.35 by Deborah Bates

The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) is expecting an increase in the number of Brits taking European holidays next year, due to the strength of the pound against the Euro.

PRWeb reports that a rise in British tourists heading on European trips, such as French holidays, is anticipated and that by staying 'closer to home', they can gain more value for their money. France, Spain, Portugal and Italy have been highlighted as the most popular destinations.

Travel industry expert Ian Raine, claims 'It is clear that the value of different currencies significantly affects what holidays people book. In the past, people were accustomed to a strong pound which allowed them to travel extensively in the Eurozone. The past few years saw the pound fall, making trips significantly more expensive, but now it seems that we are going to see economic circumstances which should encourage travel to Europe.'

Additionally, AITO believes the hike in Air Passenger Duty to long-haul destinations - such as the USA and Asia - will prompt British travellers to stay within the Eurozone.

Raine adds 'Cheaper airfares and the strength of the pound will have a very positive effect on travel to Europe. What is more, given the structural nature of these changes, we expect trips to the continent will continue to be a cost-effective option for a significant period of time.'

The news comes shortly after the Co-operative reported that European holidays 'will replace staycations,' which many Brits have favoured this year. Many of us have been holidaying within the UK to save money during the credit crunch, however Emma O'Boyle, travel specialist, claims that the outlook for European holidays looks positive for both tourists and travel companies, stating 'The traditional Eurozone destinations, such as Spain and Greece, will remain popular.'
