French Travel News 2012 | French unions announce airport workers strike

Anyone planning on heading to France this week should note that French unions have announced a four-day strike beginning on Monday 6th February.
According to news agency Reuters, the proposed protest is against a draft bill aimed at ensuring a minimum service for air travellers during industrial action.

Air France announced on its website that it would be forced to reduce its flight numbers if the strike took place and did not exclude further last-minute cancellations and delays.

France's lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, approved a bill in January to force workers in the air transport sector to give 48 hours notice of any industrial action.

The bill, proposed by President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party, was intended to give airlines more time to prepare for strikes and to set up a skeleton service for customers.

Union leaders have strongly attacked the bill, saying it undermines the rights of their workers.
