General French News | English speaking French residents set up annual Christmas market

Tuesday, December 7th at 09:25 by Deborah Bates

British ex-pats residing in the Mauroux region of French have set up an annual Marché de Noël to raise money for the local community, reports Connexion France.

In 2009, the group of British ladies decided to thank their French neighbours for their hospitality and warm welcome to the area, by holding a Christmas market. This was met with much praise, with the village mayor even donating the decorations, Christmas tree and lights.

Last year's proceeds went towards local schools, helping to fund materials and equipment for all subjects. This year the money raised will also be put towards this, alongside plans to donate a portion to the nearby retirement homes. A neighbouring resident, Peter Vowles, speaks fondly of his hometown, 'We in Mauroux are particularly aware that there are many outsiders from all over the world here,' - the town being a popular destination for those taking French holidays each year.

'For the locals, this has been a huge change [British people moving into the area]. They have welcomed us and supported us. We were delighted with the range and diversity of the stalls. The book stall, which had books in French, Dutch and English, was busy throughout, and the tombola was a runaway success!' says Vowles, speaking highly of the event.

'One elderly lady, who emptied her pockets and handbag of all her change, managing a win with every one Euro [tombola] ticket - she told us she was able to buy all her Christmas presents for her family with just nine Euros!' concludes Vowles.

Le Forty Six Magazine reports that last years' event had around 350 attendees, with over that number expected this year when it takes place on the fourth of December.
