French Travel News 2012 | Auvergne: Moutains in your mind
News reaches YourFrenchHolidays about a great new attraction to visit in Auvergne.
The Panoramique des Dômes, opening in June 2012, is a rack railway (otherwise known as a cog railway) that will give visitors access to the spectacular views offered by the Puy de Dôme mountain range.
Take your seats and enjoy the scenery in front of you: spread out over an area of around 60 kilometres, you’ll see more than eighty volcanoes stretching from north to south, as if on parade.
At the northern end of the route is Le Gour de Tazenat, a beautiful, completely circular lake while at the southern end is Le Puy de Montenard. And the highest point is Le Puy de Dôme at 1,465 metres, which is listed as a Grand Site de France.
In other news, the process is underway for this part of Auvergne to join the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, with La Chaîne des Puys and La Faille de la Limagne set to join the religious edifices that are already listed and comprise part of the Way of St. James pilgrimage route.
