French Travel News-2010/2011 | French resorts offer pre-season snow for eager skiers
The month of October may seem a little early to be heading off to the mountains for a holiday in a skiing chalet. France, however, already boasts several resorts with good skiing conditions and many skiers may find that now is the ideal time to get out on the slopes.
According to an article in Le Figaro, a number of French resorts are already offering snow-hungry skiers the chance to get out on the pistes before the ski season kicks into full swing towards the end of November.
One such resort is Haute-Tarentaise on the Grande Motte glacier in Tignes, which re-opened last weekend with a 10cm dusting of fresh powder snow. Every year, the resort is the first in France to offer skiers a small taste of the season to come, with a skiing area that gradually expands as more snow falls.
For British ski enthusiasts looking to get away over the October half term, the Deux Alpes resort in the Isère region is open for business for one week between 23 October and 1 November. During this period, skiers will be able to take part in a special weekend of celebrations, and enjoy free trials of skis and snowboards as local suppliers look to promote their new product ranges.
While skiing at the resorts at this time of year is restricted to fairly small areas, conditions are nonetheless good and resorts are much less crowded than during the peak winter months. Ski passes and accommodation costs also tend to be cheaper at this time of year, so an early ski holiday could also prove to be great value for money.
