There's great news for Corsica this week, as it has just been announced that the beautiful Mediterranean island will host the launch the opening stages of the world's biggest cycling race, the Tour de France, in summer 2013.
The island has never hosted the Tour before and the awarding of the opening stages is even more prestigious because 2013 sees the race celebrating its centenary.
The probable three stages are as follows:
Stage one: Porto-Vecchio - Bastia, 146km
Stage two: Bastia - Ajaccio, 146km
Stage three: Ajaccio-Calvi, 155km
If you want to familiarize yourself with Corsica next summer, it's a good idea to book your next French holiday early before flight prices increase as peak season approaches. There is a good range of rental accommodation available on the island, with something for all budgets.
Corsica is a truly unique French territory, with a proud local identity and heritage and a marvelously laid-back approach. It has some of Europe's best beaches, great local cuisine and, in the rugged hinterland, some of the most spectacular walking trails in France.
