Film Review | Of Gods and Men- Des Hommes et des Dieux
Director: Xavier Beauvois
Stars: Lambert Wilson, Michel Lonsdale, Olivier rabourdin
Available on DVD and Blu-Ray
On paper the idea of a ‘spiritual’ thriller focusing on the lives of a group of French Cistercian monks living quietly in the Algerian hills is not promising.
But two things make Of Gods and Men an extraordinary, compelling tale. First, the gentle scene-setting of Xavier Beauvois’ drama – daily rhythms of prayer, dining together en groupe and interacting with the poor and needy of the village – serves to present the harmony and tranquility which is about to be challenged.
Second, the imminent threat of violence which looms as Muslims extremist seek to take over the country, and which forces the group to consider either staying to serve both God and the village or to leave and perhaps save their very lives, is based on real events.
Featuring some magical set pieces, beautiful camerawork and choice occasional use of music, this film is at its heart, a powerful probe of faith and the importance of group unity. It’s a thought-provoking masterpiece, a modern day classic addressing timeless themes.
Notable performances include those of Lambert Wilson as the man elected by his peers the steer the group through the troubles and Michael Lonsdale as the kindly doctor who has the closest affinity with locals. The director was a box office smash in France and garnered countless awards for both its maker and stars, all of which make it a must-see now that it’s finally out on DVD and Blu-Ray.
