Film Review | L'illusionnist- animated film by Sylvain Chomet

The animated film by Sylvain Chomet gives life to a beautiful unpublished script by Jacques Tati.

The lead character is not Mr Hulot but Mr Tatischeff( Tati's original surname) who loses his job at the theatre and is forced to take on obscure fringe theatre roles in cafe's or at garden parties, that is until he meets a young girl, Alice who will change his life forever.

We loved Chomet's first movie 'The Triplets of Belleville' and were impressed with the quality of the animation, and 'The Illusioniste' looks set to be as successful.

However the adaptation of Tati's script hasn't been welcomed by one of Tati's grandsons, Richard McDonald, who was quoted by The Guardian as saying: 'The sabotaging of Tati's original L'illusionniste script, without recognising his troubled intentions, so that it resembles little more than a grotesque, eclectic, nostalgic homage to its author is the most disrespectful act.'
