Description Villages of the Dordogne – a holiday from self-guided walking specialist Inntravel
With its timeless landscapes, fairy-tale châteaux and unspoiled medieval villages of turreted mansions and half-timbered houses with brown-tiled roofs, the ancient region of Quercy is a joy to discover on foot.
This is a region best explored at leisure, and a self-guided walking holiday allows travellers to do just that – armed with a detailed map and route notes that are regularly checked and updated, walkers can set their own pace, pausing to admire the wildlife, to visit a wayside chapel, and to linger over a picnic in a panoramic spot.
Starting in the handsome old town of Beaulieu, whose origins date back to the 9th century, the route leads via alluring villages such as Autoire, Loubressac and Carennac, to name but three.
The walks, which range from 7km to 18km, are generally easy, albeit with some short ascents and descents. As luggage is transferred between hotels, all that need be carried is a picnic, drinks and a camera.
A warm welcome awaits each evening at the family-run 2- and 3-star hotels and chambres d’hôtes along the route, but one of the real highlights is the cuisine – the dinners of delicious regional produce serve as a just reward after a day’s walking.
Prices are per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room, and include 7 nights’ accommodation, breakfast and dinner every day, 3 picnics, walking notes, maps and luggage transfers. Extra nights can be booked at any hotel.
